An open letter to the people of the Fox Valley: Conkey's Book Store is going out of business. After 113 years of serving the Fox Valley, it has been a hard decision to make. Nevertheless, as the fifth proprietor of this establishment, and as the previous owners before me have done, we have given it our all. We take pride in our part of bringing famous authors and illustrators to the area, providing new and local authors a place to sign and sell their new works, and above all, bringing people and books together for several generations.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your families, friends, and neighbors. I appreciate being involved in the many changes, both good and bad, that all businesses have gone through in the growth of our towns. As I look back, my biggest enjoyment has been to get to know so many wonderful, caring, and supportive people. That's what makes this announcement so hard. People really do care and I've seen it not only in our establishment, but also throughout the community. Times change, and needs are varied, but one thing stands the test of time--Friendship.
Thank you for being such loyal customers, business associates, colleagues, and friends. I will always proudly remember the good things we've accomplished. It is my hope that together, we can continue to work for the common good.

Conkey's Bookstore is the oldest independent bookstore in the state of Wisconsin. Located in downtown Appleton since 1896, Conkey's has been the recipient of local, state, and national awards attesting to its excellence as a full service bookstore. Here you will find a vast selection of over 120,000 titles including many of which are hard to find elsewhere. Since its inception more than a hundred years ago, Conkey's has been a family owned independent bookstore. We may not be the new kids on the block, but we've been around the block, and we know books better than anyone!

As an integral part of the community, a special effort is made to support the local literary community through placing books in our extensive Wisconsin section and through hosting of poetry readings and reading groups.

Conkey's is more than a fine bookstore, it includes a distinctive Gift Shop which offers customers a unique selection of cards and gifts. The store's renovations in the early 1990's allowed for the Gift Shop to be expanded.

Conkey's business philosophy has always been service-centered toward it's customers. "Our goal is to provide customers with a broad selection of books and merchandise. We believe that to serve others is a privilege and a responsibility."
